ESPN Vukovich Biography is Beautiful Piece of Work

Any serious researcher of Bill Vukovich's life, as well as the accident, needs to view the biography on Vukovich which appeared on ESPN Classic in May of 2001 as part of their Sports Legends series.

The program is a serious look at Vukovich's racing history, his life, his family and his personality. Many family members, racing historians and significant people in Vukovich's life and career appear on the program.

Some of them include son Bill Vukovich, daughter Marlene Vukovich, Indy 500 driver and fellow Fresno resident Johnny Boyd, two-time Indianapolis winner Roger Ward, Team Manager Jim Travers, The Dean of Motorsports Writers Chris Economacki, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Historian Donald Davidson, Vukovich's niece Eldora Prieto, family friend Mike Garabedian, former midget drivers Dickie Reese and Danny Oaks, auto racing historian Al Gross, racing author Dick Wallen and other friends and associates who were familiar with Vukovich's life.

The film drives home the life of Vukie from his meager beginnings in the grape fields of the San Joaquin Valley in California, through the deaths of his father and mother, his aspiring interest in automobiles, his beginnings in racing and his achievements at Indianapolis. The film is well put together, covers a lot of territory, takes one through the gamut of emotions and helps bring us a little closer to understanding the Fresno Flash who went on to achieve such greatness.
