The What Ifs

What if it had not been a windy day.

What if Vukovich and Boyd had slowed down when they first saw Ward crashing.

What if Keller had not gone so far inside.

What if Keller had not touched the infield grass.

What if Keller had not careened off in the direction he did.

What if Elisian had not been granted an extra qualifying attempt after the 6:00 o'clock deadline on Bump Day, made the field and was in the perfect position to see Vukovich go over the wall.

What if Keller's car had been equipped with a set of regular brakes and not just a hand brake.

What if Ward had brought his car into the pits after it started handling badly.

What if Vukovich had not hit Boyd's car in exactly the way it did.

What if Boyd had not given Vuky that "final tap."

What if Vuky would have continued to go the right to avoid Ward like he first intended to do but then changed his mind.

What if Vuky's car had not come to rest upside down.

What if Vuky's car had not caught fire.

What if the accident happened on the Main Straightaway.

What if Vukovich had been at a a different part of the track at the time Ward spun out.

What if any of the drivers had been at a different part of the track when Ward lost it.

What if Vukovich would have been a second ahead or behind of where he was when the accident started.

What if the Streamliner car had been finished and Vukovich had been driving it instead of the Hopkins Special.

What if Vukovich would not have had such a ferocious duel with McGrath and possibly eased up some after the duel was over and thereby been at a different part of the track.

What if Vukovich had not been looking at his tires when he exited the second turn on lap 57.

What if it had rained on May 30, 1955 like it would have done on any other day in Indiana on a day like that.

What if fate had not stepped in.
